Uttarakhand

The land of sacred rivers and border valleys

From the pilgrim valleys of Garhwal to the remote Vyas valley on the Tibet border, Uttarakhand rewards riders with forested switchbacks, roaring rivers and some of the most spiritually significant mountains in India.

Uttarakhand is split into two regions — Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east. Roads climb from the foothills through pine and oak forest to high valleys inhabited by Bhotia communities, many of which require Inner Line Permits.

Riding here is a mix of smooth highway, narrow mountain roads and, near the border, unpaved sections that change with every monsoon.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to ride to the border areas?

Yes. Areas such as the Vyas valley need an Inner Line Permit. Requirements change, so we confirm the current process when you book.

When is the monsoon?

Typically July to mid-September, when landslides make many mountain roads unreliable.
