Option 1: Your own bike, planned yourself
This is the cheapest way, if you have the time to organise it and the experience to ride alone.
Fuel
Our loop from Rishikesh through Munsiyari, Gunji, Adi Kailash, Om Parvat and Almora is about 1,400 km. At roughly 25–30 km per litre in the mountains, a 400–450cc adventure bike needs around 50–55 litres. With petrol at about ₹102 per litre in Pithoragarh (November 2026), that is roughly ₹5,000–₹6,000. Add more if you start from Delhi.
Don't count on finding fuel once you leave the Dharchula area: fill up in Dharchula and carry a spare 5-litre can for the Gunji–Jolingkong–Nabhidhang days.
Stays and food
- Foothill towns (Gwaldam, Munsiyari, Almora): hotels and homestays from budget to comfortable.
- Dharchula: simple hotels; book ahead in May and June.
- Gunji, Nabi and Kuti: basic homestays with shared rooms and simple meals. Expect ₹1,000–₹2,000 per person per night for extra nights; plan in the same range for regular nights and confirm with your host.
Meals in the hills are simple dal-rice-roti thalis and Maggi at roadside dhabas, and are not expensive — but nothing is guaranteed beyond Dharchula, so carry snacks.
Permit and paperwork
The Inner Line Permit fee itself is small. The real costs are the paperwork around it: a medical certificate from an MBBS doctor, a police verification certificate, photocopies and photos, and sometimes a notarised affidavit. Budget a few hundred rupees plus a day in Dharchula. Full details: Inner Line Permit for Adi Kailash on a motorcycle.
Repairs and spares
There are no workshops beyond Dharchula. Carry a puncture kit, clutch and accelerator cables, a spare tube and basic tools — and know how to use them. A recovery vehicle from Dharchula, if you can find one, is expensive.
Option 2: Renting a motorcycle
Rent in Uttarakhand. Rental motorcycles registered in Uttarakhand with a valid Uttarakhand or all-India permit can be ridden beyond Dharchula to Gunji, Adi Kailash and Om Parvat — whether they carry a yellow (commercial) or a black plate. Rental bikes registered in other states are generally stopped at Dharchula. So rent from a company based in Uttarakhand (for example in Rishikesh, Dehradun or Haldwani), check that the bike's papers and permit are valid for your dates, and carry copies of the RC, permit and rental agreement.
Budget for:
- Daily rent for 9–10 days (you pay for the whole trip, not only the riding days)
- A refundable security deposit
- Damage charges — mountain roads are hard on rental bikes, and many companies charge extra for high-altitude routes
- Fuel, the same as above
Get a written quote for the whole trip and read the damage terms before you pay.
Option 3: A guided Adi Kailash bike tour
A guided tour costs more than riding alone on your own bike, but it removes the hardest parts: finding beds in Gunji in peak season, the permit process, breakdowns and medical emergencies.

Costs people forget
- Cash: ATMs are scarce beyond Dharchula and mobile networks are patchy. Carry ₹10,000–₹15,000 in cash for the upper valley.
- Extra nights: a landslide or snow can hold you for a day. Keep one or two spare nights in your budget and your leave.
- Riding gear: good gloves, boots and waterproofs matter more here than on most rides.
- Insurance: personal accident and medical insurance that covers riding at high altitude.
- Getting to the start: train, bus or flight to Rishikesh, Dehradun or Kathgodam, and back.
Which option is right for you?
- Experienced, with your own reliable bike and time to plan? Ride it yourself — or join a guided tour with your own bike to share the logistics.
- No suitable bike, or not sure about rental rules? A guided tour on a company motorcycle is the simplest and safest choice.
- First time above 4,000 m? Ride with a group that carries oxygen and a mechanic.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to do Adi Kailash by bike?
Riding your own motorcycle and planning the trip yourself. Your main costs are fuel for about 1,400 km from Rishikesh, basic stays and food, and the permit paperwork.
How much fuel do I need for Adi Kailash and Om Parvat?
Around 50–55 litres for a 1,400 km loop from Rishikesh on a 400–450cc bike. Fill up in Dharchula and carry a spare can for the upper valley, where fuel is hard to find.
Can I take a rented bike to Adi Kailash?
Yes, if it is registered in Uttarakhand and has a valid Uttarakhand or all-India permit — yellow or black plate. Rental bikes registered in other states are generally not allowed beyond Dharchula, so rent within Uttarakhand.
How much does the Adi Kailash permit cost?
The permit fee is nominal. Budget a few hundred rupees more for the medical certificate, police verification, photos and copies.
How much cash should I carry?
About ₹10,000–₹15,000 for the stretch beyond Dharchula, as ATMs and card payments are unreliable there.
